Germany Holiday 2001 - Holland

On the way back, and earlier on our way out there, we stopped off in neighbouring Holland - a very agreeable place.

The massive German war cemetery just outside Eindhoven. Just one of the 50,000 graves. This is what is known as a communal cemetery - bodies from all around the area eventually end up here. I say eventually because the numbers at this cemetery are added to every year as builders, farmers and gardeners unearth yet more bodies.

In case you are wondering, this is what 50,000 graves look like. Most of the bodies, as you would expect, date from 1944 onwards. There is a small section of graves from 1914 in the opening to the cemetery.

The small commonwealth cemetery just down the road - I thought I would photograph these two lads as they are from the Cheshire Regiment.

The Overloon War Museum - me with a B25.

Again at Overloon - a damaged Sherman tank.

The famous Frost Bridge at Arnhem on the lower Rhine. If you have seen the excellent film A Bridge too Far then you will recognise this as the bridge that the Parachute Regiment tried and failed to take - the name of the bridge is in honour of the commanding officer of the paras that landed here. There is very little of the original bridge left - it did get a little bit of a going over during the battle and the surrounding area has been seriously redeveloped.

The Arnhem Cemetery.
