Liverpool days out December 2007

I had two noteworthy days out in Liverpool during December. The first was the tail end of the Christmas shopping. This was nice as I was able to laugh openly at people who were still doing theirs. The second was the opening of the sales - my sister in law was most certainly in her element....

The first thing you notice about Liverpool is just how nice the buildings are. This is, as many of you will no doubt know, the Liver Buildings at Pier Head. For people of my generation, depending on your mood, this is where either a) you recall Nerys Hughes tottering around in horrible bell bottoms in the opening titles of the Liver Birds, or b) you recall Yosser Hughes losing the will to live in Boys from the Blackstuff.

Sadly, it also shows signs that the stoned archtects from the 1960's were set loose from university to wreak havoc during the 1970's. This building is just so horrible that it's only practical use is as Gene Hunt's nick in Life on Mars.

Staying with the 1970's theme, found this Austin Allegro parked next to Granada Studios in the Albert Dock. Rare to see one looking this good - most of them ended up down railway embankments or as razor blades years ago. This one is in better condition than it ever was on the production line at Longbridge......

Old Lightship in Albert Dock....

Liverpool Maritime Museum - mock up of ASDEC equipment (the original machine that goes 'bing')....

Liverpool Maritime Museum - old deck gun....

Next to the Mersey - Billy Fury (proto-pop star from the 1950's)....

Dervla my luverly niece - ice skating (actually plastic sheet skating) in St George's hall....

My luverly niece and luverly sister - plastic sheet skating...

Click ball to go back.......
