Other Stuff

I have grouped together here all of the stuff that would not fit into any other category for one reason or another....

Boogie Nights - 1997

This is a great film about the rise and fall of Dirk Diggler - a well endowed newcomer to the 1970's porn industry (obviously based on John Holmes). Paul Thomas Anderson used just about every cinematic trick (long tracking shots and slow motion effects - even a tracking shot that goes underwater) to make this pornographic epic (there's no real porn in it - don't worry, but I would wait until you are 18 to see this one). This follows Dirk (Mark Wahlberg) from his discovery by Jack Horner (Burt Reynolds) right through the 1970's porn boom and into cocaine induced self destruction in the 1980's.

Basically - the porno industry in well filmed epic form

Best Bit - the trailers for the Brock Landers series of porno-films (including jerky cameras,  terrible film stock and poor acting).

The Life Aquatic - 2004

This is a strange one but I did not think it would go into comedy - it is not a pure comedy film. This is Wes Anderson's follow up to the Royal Tennenbaums. It is obviously a very clever parody of Jack Costeau, the famous French diver, played to perfection by Bill Murray. The cast is fairly impressive, with Jeff Goldblum, Angelica Houston and Owen Wilson turning up to lend support.

Basically - Zissou goes off in search of the Jaguar Shark

Best Bit - Any scene involving Bill Murray or the black guy singing Bowie songs in Portugese.....
