YYZ Live @ Limelight Club 07th December 2003
Ok - so you are probably thinking that I went to see these guys back in September when I went to the Rush Convention at the same club. Well, on that occasion I was a bit on the ill side and left early - how pissed off? So as soon as I heard that the lads would be in town for a free gig I made sure I was there to finally check them out. You can find a full review of this day in the December 2003 update of What's New.
As in September, I was able to get a little bit of a backstage pass (just asking nicely) and get amongst those drums. Paul Handley, the drummer, plays a very nice top-of-the-range Pearl kit - with a mixture of Zildjian, Meinl and Sabian cymbals (the Sabian Crash at the front of the kit projects like you would not believe).
Another shot of Paul's kit - showing the lovely free floater snare, Remo Pinstripe Heads, the cowbells (an essential part of any Rush drummer's arsenal) and the microphones.
Vocalist Gary Hopkins - armed with an impressive array of keyboards....
Guitarist Simon Fraser-Clarke launching into another Alex break.....
Bass Player Paul Hands - armed with an essential part of Rush folklore; Rickenbacker 4001 Semi.
Another lesser known piece of Rush folklore - the Hohner mini bass - as used by Geddy on the Grace Under Pressure Concert Video.
Paul H - he's in there somewhere, honestly - launches into a solo during YYZ...
The whole band - Gary, Simon and the two Pauls.... once again you will have to take my word for it that there are actually two Pauls...
We're leaving now....... "where the hell's Xanadu...?"
